Statement of the Polish Society of Andrology regarding to the impact of Sars-Cov-2 virus infection on male reproductive system
For about 1.5 years, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has spread around the world, causing moderate or severe COVID-19 symptoms in approximately 20% of infected persons. Due to the presence of ACE-2 (angiotensin converting enzyme type 2) and receptors TMPRSS2 (transmembrane serine protease 2), in Leydig, Sertoli and spermatogenesis cells, male gonads may be the site of coronavirus infection. Inflammation of the testicles may occur in the course of infection, causing damage to their seminiferous and hormonal activity. In addition, deterioration of male fertility and sexual function may be associated with a generalized response to infection. The article presents recommendations for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in men who have had COVID-19 and try to conceive a child, based on the current state of knowledge.
