Prostate disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Fatty liver disease associated with metabolic disorders (MASLD, formerly NAFLD) is a manifestation of metabolic syndrome in the liver. It is estimated to affect up to a quarter of the world’s population. The prevalence of MASLD is due to lifestyle, diet and insufficient physical activity, which together lead to lipid abnormalities and abnormal carbohydrate metabolism. There are now increasing reports of its association with a high risk of prostate disease, both benign hyperplasia and prostate cancer, as well as lower urinary tract symptoms. Insulin resistance and metabolic disorders have been suggested as possible mechanisms for the association between MASLD and prostate disease. However, more research in this area is needed to fully explain this association.
